Abstract
One of the conditions for updating the control and evaluation system in school education is to reduce the share of traditional written tests through the introduction of authentic forms of assessment, which involve the use of relevant assessment tools that are significant for students: tests of practical skills, situational tasks and portfolios. The article analyzes the portfolio from the point of view of new requirements for the system of assessing student achievements. A portfolio is considered as a form and process of organizing samples and products of educational and cognitive activity of students with subsequent analysis, including self-assessment and reflection. Portfolio technology is described as one of the effective mechanisms for assessing individual student achievements.
